Raw Superfood Protein Balls

Looking for something to nourish you around 3pm…..then these raw superfood balls are the perfect treat!

This super easy, nourishing recipe is a great news for anyone trying to quit sugar or limit the amount of fructose in their diets! You can get as creative as you like with this one and add additional superfoods like goji berries, cinnamon or vanilla-bean paste!

Raw Superfood Protein Balls

Inspired by Lee Sutherland from Fitness in the City

What you’ll need

+ 1 cup mixed nuts (preferably soaked to activate them)

+ 2 scoops of protein powder (I have used Bare Blends Organic Cacao)

+ 1/2 cup desiccated coconut

+ 2 tbls chia seeds

+2 tbls sesame seeds

+ 2 tbls raw cacao

+ 2 tbls coconut oil

+ 2 tbls rice malt syup

What you need to do

Simply place all ingredients into a food processor and whizz until combined. Roll your bliss balls into bite size balls and roll in coconut flakes, chia seeds, cacao or leave them plain. Pop them into the freezer to firm up for an hour and you’ve got a quick and easy nourishing treat! What’s Nourishing snack do you reach for mid-afternoon?

This week I prepare myself for detox….

As we fast approach the end of January and mark the official end of the ‘silly season’, many people look at this time for a much needed rest from the indulgences of the past few months! Whether it be Febfast, a juice cleanse, quitting sugar or detox,  the start of February marks a beautiful point in the year to really kick your health goals into action and start living a vibrant and nourished life!

I too am feeling ready for a cleanse, ready to immerse myself in a whole month of clean living and vibrancy, and I’m thrilled that I will be embarking on this journey with a tribe of like-minded health conscious souls all led by my naturopath Emma Sutherland!

Three times a year, Emma runs a month long Community Detox with her goal being to help people regain their energy, vibrancy and lust for life! Through an online community, detoxees are supported every step of the way with meal plans, recipes, healthy suggestions, ingredients of the day, competitions and incredible discounts on products like LOVING EARTH!

The four most common results from the last Community Detox were:

1. Weight loss

2. Great energy, more positivity

3. Glowing Skin

4. No bloating

This is the second time I’ve done this detox and I can honestly say the quality and support of this program just gets better and better!

So what am I doing to prepare my body for detox?

+ Over the past 2 weeks I have weened myself off coffee….yes I am embarrassed to admit that I had developed a nasty habit of having a coffee each morning….and whilst I think this is fine for most people. I know in my own body that I don’t respond well to caffeine at all….it makes my heart beat fast, I become anxious….and it works against everything I work hard on controling!

+ I have started to ‘crowd out’ all non-detox approved foods! Instead of focusing on what I can’t have, I’ve looked at detox as a wonderful opportunity to ADD the most amazing produce into my diet! I’m not getting hung up on what I can’t eat, instead I’m focused on what I can have and having lots of it!

+ I’m getting organised! I’ve stocked up on caffeine free teas for work, I’ve found some delicious new recipes to try (and share with you all) and I’ve found alternatives to my favourite treats (my version of a date free bliss ball is amazing!!). In order to make healthy habits stick you need to make it fit with your life! And life is not about deprivation.

+ I’ve committed time in my diary to make this work! One of the biggest pieces of advise I can give you when embarking on a cleanse or detox is to prioritise time for making it happen! If you don’t plan when you’ll cook and prepare your food, you are going to be caught out and left with limited options, and in the worst case you’ll break your ‘detox’ purely because you couldn’t find an alternative. Make the time to commit to your results.

+ I’ll be celebrating my successes!Just like the ‘crowding out’ mindset, throughout the month I’ll be focusing on other things (aside from food) that bring me joy in my life! One of the best things you can do for yourself is to create a ‘Nourishing List’ fill a blank page of all the things that you LOVE to do (non-food related obviously) they could be as simple as sitting on the grass with bare feet or going for a massage! Make the list and stick it on the fridge where you’ll see it every day. When you get into a ‘funk’ and all you can think about is food, you’ll know how to quickly snap yourself out of it! Choose one thing off your list and become really present as you do this activity, reminding yourself of why you are committing to these health goals.

Why I’m not setting New Year’s resolutions….

As we reach the January half-way point, I always wonder how many of us out there are still on track to achieving our goals? You know the resolutions, the intentions, the promises, the gym memberships, the detoxes…..

Sadly I’ve done all of these before, setting goals, joining gyms, embarking on ridiculous detoxes…and all with similarly disappointing results….

That was until last year year, when I decided to rebel against the check lists, and the overwhelming sense of having to ‘achieve’ and simply focused on how I wanted to FEEL….

And by that I’m talking about moment to moment FEELING…365 days of the year!

MY CORE DESIRED FEELINGS…

The concept of core desires, and tuning in to how you want to FEEL springs from Danielle La Port’s work the The Desire Map. For anyone not familiar with Danielle’s work, the desire mapping process encourages you to choose 4-5 words which represent and resonate with HOW you want to FEEL during every moment. The idea is that instead of putting pressure on yourself to achieve a certain number of outcomes during the year, namely New Year’s resolutions….she instead encourages you at every opportunity to connect with how you want to feel.

The process forces a connection on a more conscious level.. a moment of pause and reflection to step back and ask ourselves

‘By doing this, is it going to make me feel the way I want to feel?’

‘Is this decision or action in alignment with where I want to be in my life?’

‘Will the outcome of this decision take me one step closer to manifesting my dreams?’

Core Desires

The real ‘ah ha’ moment comes when you actually take the time to stop, reflect and check-in with how you feel and whether the decision you’ve made actually aligns with what you are trying to manifest in your life…..because if it doesn’t…..why the hell are you doing it?

Over Christmas, I spent time thinking and heartstomring about what I wanted to create this year…I came up with these core desired feelings…..

ABUNDANCE, FREEDOM, VIBRANT, GROUNDED AND CLARITY…..

I’ve shared my core desires on my Vision Board. I’ve also placed them on a post-it note on my laptop, right next to my desk at work and they have become part of my mental gratitude list each night….‘Did I feel each of my CORE DESIRES today? If not why not?’ This process is so important in continuing to show up for yourself and for these feelings to unfold and manifest each and EVERYDAY.

2014 intentions

So what’s stopping you from feeling the way you want to FEEL in 2014? Why don’t you give it a go! Instead of goals, expectations, pressure, and lists, spend some time this week thinking about how you want to FEEL!

Use a thesaurus for inspiration, find words, pictures and quotes that jump out and inspire YOU….

Take the time to connect with yourself and create your best life.

Nourishing You….Warm Summer Salad Recipe

dusk swimmingWarm summer nights in Australia mean long days, afternoon swims and lots of entertaining with family and friends…

One of my favourite summer recipes which is always a crowd pleaser is my warm summer salad, which is so quick and easy to make! It’s perfect for summer BBQ or a quick lunch when friends pop around.

Warm Summer Salad

Prep Time: 15 minutes, Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 400g Organic Chicken Breast, cut into strips
  • 3 cup mixed green leaves
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cucumber, cut into thin circular discs
  • 60g goats cheese
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 2 orange, cut into small segments
  • ½ bunch coriander, chopped

Dressing

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 orange juiced
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 2 teaspoons organic sweet chilli sauce
  • 2 tablespoons coriander chopped

What you need to do…

_MG_5528In a medium sized bowl place the mixed leaves, chopped cherry tomatoes, chopped cucumber, goats cheese, avocado, orange segments and coriander and mix until combined.

In a small bowl prepare the dressing by mixing all ingredients together and season with sea salt and pepper.

In a medium sized wok, heat 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and cook the chicken strips until it is golden brown and tender. Be careful not to overcook your chicken, you want it to be slightly pink inside. Once cooked, remove from the heat and place the chicken on a plate and cover with aluminium foil to rest for 2-5 minutes.

Once the chicken has rested, toss it through the dressing and then mix the chicken and remaining dressing through the salad mix.
